First State Girl Scouts will make a special delivery to the USO at Dover Air Force Base Wednesday. Operation Taste of Home will provide 988 cases of Girl Scout Cookies donated by their customers for members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay spokesperson Jennifer Acord says Girl Scouts will be unloading 11,856 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies onto USO trucks which will then send them to Army bases overseas.
“A very important part of girl scouting is making the world a better place and these girls learn the importance of giving back to the members of the U.S military who sacrifice so much for our country, she notes. “ We get thank-you notes all the time from soldiers.”
Operation Taste of Home was created in 2003 during the Iraq War and Girl Scout cookies continue to be one of the most requested items by U.S soldiers stationed overseas.
Customers purchase boxes or cases of cookies as part of the community service component of the Girl Scout Cookie Program.
Acord says Operation Taste of Home has been successful ever since its inception.
“It grew so much that it was more cookies than the military could actually take. That’s why we started giving them to local charities as well and we have about 50 charities on the Delmarva Peninsula in every part of our council that also gets the cookies.”
Acord adds the cookie program offers First State girls five essential skills; goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.
2015 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of Girl Scout troops in Delaware.
