Delaware continues efforts to promote car seat safety

The Delaware Office of Highway Safety is promoting National Child Passenger Safety Week this week.

The goal of Child Passenger Safety Week is to spread awareness and promote all children being properly restrained in the correct car seat for their age, height, and weight.

Cynthia Cavett with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety notes the leading cause of death of children between 1-to-13 nationwide is car crashes.

"This is why we're giving caregivers multiple options for making sure that they choose and use the correct car seats for their children every time." said Cavett. "We have a virtual webinar series that we've launched this week, the three-part virtual webinar series that we’re very happy to provide the public with."

The webinar will include three topics: newborn safety, the correct ages and stages, and common mistakes and misuses of car seats.

Cavett says many people need help installing car seats.

"We've actually found that four out of five car seats are not properly installed, and that could definitely provide some big problems in case there is a crash that we want to make sure that people are informed ahead of time and know what they're doing," Cavett said.

The Delaware Office of Highway Safety offers learning opportunities, free resources, and more information through their child passenger safety fitting stations and coordinators.

Virtual appointments are available with fitting station staff to learn how to properly use car seats, booster seats, and seat belts based on your child’s age. You can make those appointments by calling the Delaware Office of Highway Safety at (302) 256-1123 in New Castle County or (302) 387-2324 in Kent or Sussex County.

National Child Passenger Safety Week runs through Sept. 26th.
