Delaware AG's office moves to shut down nuisance properties

Delaware Public Media

A house that police and prosecutors say was part of an open-air drug market in southern Kent County is shut down and the residents evicted after a court recently declared it to be a “criminal nuisance property.”

The house at 118 Unity Lane in Greenwood is part of an area known as “The Hole,” that has been a location for drug transactions for quite some time.

A Delaware State Police investigation in conjunction with Department of Justice investigators monitored a number of drug transaction in the area, and as a result, a judge recently entered a judgment granting Permanent Abatement Relief against the property.

The order bans six people, including three men and three women, from the property; the order also declares that the property be shut down for two years.

Earlier this month, DOJ investigators, DSP troopers and members of the Kent County Governor’s Task Force escorted the occupants out of the home and then barricaded the house and posted a sign that declared it to be a criminal nuisance property.

Five other properties were also recently targeted by DOJ and police under the criminal nuisance law.  Two of the properties were in Middletown.  The others were in Newark, New Castle and Wilmington. Each had histories of drug dealing, gun activity or prostitution.
