Coons & Carper bash Trump's withdraw of transgender guidance

Delaware Public Media

Delaware’s two U.S. Senators are bashing President Trump’s decision to withdraw guidance that would protect the rights of transgender students.

Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons both called the decision "misguided" and "cruel" in statements this week.

Carper said "all Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity, deserve equal protection under the law."

And Coons said "this is not a states’ rights issue — it is a civil rights issue that affects students in every state across the country."

The president’s decision rescinds Obama-era guidelines that direct schools to let transgender students use the bathroom that matches their gender identity, or risk losing Title IX funding.

Individual schools will still be allowed to decide which bathrooms transgender students can use.

And the effect of Mr. Trump’s decision should be minimal in Delaware.

The state passed a law in 2013 that provides protections for transgender people in public places like schools.
