Delaware’s transportation secretary is departing.
Gov. John Carney’s office announced Friday that DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan is leaving his cabinet in October. Cohan has spent 31 years working for the state in a variety of capacities.
Carney commends Cohan’s efforts to modernize DelDOT.
“I’ve been in this long enough to remember when DelDOT had a terrible reputation," said Carney. "And that reputation has been transformed over the last 20 years or so and Jen continued that improvement.”
Cohan was appointed DelDOT secretary in 2015 by then-Gov. Jack Markell after 8 years as Director of the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicle.
She steps down after overseeing the development of the state's largest-ever six-year capital transportation plan.
Cohan says continued management of that nearly $4 billion project will be the biggest challenge for DelDOT going forward.
“The I-95 rehabilitation project is going to be a very large one, and it’s going to take several years and it’s going to be very disruptive, so managing that is going to be crucial," said Cohan. "This COVID situation has left our piggy bank a little lighter, so we’re going to have to start looking into that in the next 18 months as well.”
Cohan is moving on to become CEO of Leadership Delaware - a nonprofit year long program for Delaware’s future leaders.
Carney intends to nominate Deputy DelDOT Secretary Nicole Majeski as Cohan’s replacement. The State Senate needs to confirm that pick.
