Chemours is being fined $13 million by the state of North Carolina.
A consent order alleges the Delaware-based chemical company violated air and water quality laws by polluting the environment with a Teflon-based chemical called GenX from its Fayetteville Works manufacturing site.
In addition to the fine, Chemours must reduce GenX emissions at the site by at least 99%.
It is also not allowed to discharge process wastewater there until it receives a permit to do so and must install monitoring wells as part of a Corrective Action Plan to remediate area groundwater.
And Chemours is required to supply areas contaminated by GenX with public drinking water.
The order states Chemours is denying the violation of any law, regulation or permit, and has agreed to the demands of the consent order only to avoid litigation.
The order still needs a judge’s approval, but it is expected to resolve legal action against Chemours by the state's Department of Environmental Quality and from the environmental organization, Cape Fear River Watch.
