The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is ready to say “thank you” to the military community this weekend.
The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is offering free passenger round trip, same-day travel for veterans and active military personnel with a valid ID Sunday.
“For Veterans Day, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry wanted to honor and thank our military community for their service to our country. If it wasn’t for our military service members, we would not have the the freedoms we do today,” said Jim Salmon, public information officer for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, which operates the Ferry.
He says this is the second year the Ferry is offering the special free fare.
All military personnel and veterans also receive a free cup of coffee or fountain soda, plus 11% off any food or retail purchases in either the Cape May or Lewes terminal Sunday. The discounts apply onboard the ferry vessels as well.
All active or retired military personnel can receive an emailed discount voucher worth $11 off any future travel onboard the Ferry through March 20-19. You must have a valid military I-D to get that voucher.
Currently, 78,000 veterans live in Delaware - about 8% of the First State’s population. There are 400,000 veterans living in New Jersey - and in Cape May County alone, vets make up nearly 9% of the population, one of the highest rates in New Jersey.
