Can-Do playground opens in Milford

Local leaders and members of the community gathered in Milford Friday to celebrate the opening of a playground five years in the making.

The more than 32,000 square-foot Can-Do playground features ramps and other equipment that children of all cognitive or physical abilities can use.

Milford Mayor Bryan Shupe was among those at Friday's dedication ceremony. He praised the access the Can-Do Playground offers to all kids.

"Anything we can do to encourage healthy lifestyles for our families -- of all abilities -- is wonderful," said Shupe.

The playground, built behind the Boys and Girls Club of Milford, was made possible by a number of local organizations, including six Delaware Rotary Clubs. The Ronald McDonald House Charities also contributed $25,000 to the effort.

David Rutt, who chaired the Can-Do committee that oversaw the park’s construction, thanked those that made it possible at the ceremony in Milford, but emphasized the park isn’t for them.

"When it’s all said and done, we’re here for a dedication, and who do we dedicate it to? We don’t dedicate it to the Rotarians, we don’t dedicate it to the State of Delaware or the City of Milford. We dedicate this to the kids," said Rutt.

The Can-Do committee calls it the first of its kind in Central and Southern Delaware, and Shupe added he expects visitors from communities around the region to visit Milford to use it.

There is Can-Do playground in the Alapocas Run State Park in New Castle County. It opened on July 2007.
