The Brandywine Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recovered 60 neglected cats from a home in West Whiteland Township, PA, Thursday.

The SPCA went to the home after a tip from police who were responding to a health emergency call.

“The homeowner was elderly with declining health and has since moved out of the home, and we were able to take the animals on a surrender and have them become our property,” said BVSPCA spokeswoman Linda Torelli.

The cats, mostly Persian mixes, were found in crates with matted fur--some covered in their own feces. The animals have been treated, and are now up for adoption at the group’s West Chester and New Castle locations, though they still need to be socialized with humans.

“They came from a situation where they really didn’t have a lot of human interaction. So folks who are adopting need to be prepared to bring them into their home in a quiet area, give them a chance to settle in, start to feel confident and feel safe again,” said Torelli.

This instance of animal neglect is one of two major cases received by the BVSPCA this week with a total of 92 recovered animals.  The other was in Seaford.

The BVSPCA is urging the public to come out and adopt, and has waved the adoption fee for large adult dogs.
