Brandywine Zoo reups accreditation

Wilmington’s Brandywine Zoo has the renewed stamp of approval from The Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Marketing Director Jennifer Lynch, said after a thorough review this summer, the AZAreaccredited the Brandywine Zoo.

"To be accredited the zoo undergoes a thorough investigation every five years to ensure it has and will continue to meet the ever rising standards," Lynch said.

The accreditation means the zoo takes good care of its animals, has a healthy veterinary program and maintains a thriving education program, Lynch said.

There are just over 200 organizations fully accredited by the AZA. Built in 1905, the zoo has maintained its ADA accreditation since 1981.

Earlier this year, the zoo opened its new Eagle Ridge exhibit - making eagle and otter exhibits more accessible and ADA compliant.  The zoo also added new reptile windows, giving people a close look at a green tree python and mossy tailed geckos.

The 12-acre Brandywine Zoo showcases animals from the tropical areas of North and South America, Asia and Africa.
