Brandywine Zoo breaks ground on Eagle Ridge Project

The Brandywine Zoo broke ground Thursday on its Eagle Ridge Project, a plan to upgrade the area around the zoo’s bald eagle and river otter exhibits.

The improvement plan will create a fully accessible path through the hilly, multi-story area at the back of the zoo, making the zoo compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

But zoo director Gene Peacock says that’s not all it will do.

It’s going to completely change the visitor experience when they’re back there looking at these exhibits, said Peacock. "It’s going to elevate the visitors up to where they can see the eagles better. They’ll be able to see the otter pool to be able to see what the otters are doing."

Seven state legislators helped secure a total of $100,000 in construction funds for the project.

Work is slated to be completed in January.
