Blunt Rochester tours NY shelter housing immigrant youth separated from parents

Delaware Public Media

Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester  (D-Delaware) toured a shelter in Dobbs Ferry New York Friday that’s housing some youth separated from their parents at the border.

Government officials and shelter staff told Blunt Rochester the 187 children there were either unaccompanied minors or removed from family members by immigration officials. But they wouldn’t disclose how many of the 12-to-18 year olds were actually torn away from parents.

Blunt Rochester said despite President Trump’s executive order requiring families be detained together, they’re still being separated.

“The challenge is that this is a bad policy and has created a bad and traumatic situation for many young people,” she said.

President Trump has blamed Democrats for his family separation policy at the border. He also wants Congress to pass new immigration legislation that limits legal immigration and fully funds his proposed border wall.

Blunt Rochester plans to speak at a rally protesting the family separation policy tomorrow morning in Dover. It starts at 10 am at Legislative Hall.

It’s one many rallies being held nationwide with the main rally in Washington D.C.
