Bicyclists can board Cape May Lewes Ferry vessels again

Delaware Public Media
Some coronavirus-related travel restrictions for Cape May Lewes Ferry are going away this week.

The Cape May Lewes Ferry is moving closer to normal operations; they are are easing some restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA), which operates the Ferry, put travel modifications in place earlier this spring.

DRBA spokesman Jim Salmon says some are now being lifted.

"Effective immediately, bicyclists are now permitted to board the vessels," said Salmon. "Guests should enter via the toll booth where they will be checked in and directed to a specific parking area.”

Salmon says passengers will also have a bit more freedom once on board.

“We’ve also allowed vehicle passengers, as well as the bicyclists who board, to roam the outer decks of the Ferry and enjoy the sunshine," said Salmon. "But you obviously must maintain social distancing and have a mask on.”

Previously, passengers were not allowed out of their vehicles while on board and bicyclists were prohibited because of COVID-19.

He notes that all foot passenger travel remains suspended until further notice, reservations are required for all others and no cash is accepted.

Meantime, Salmon says at this time, food service outlets are closed inside the ferry terminals in Cape May, New Jersey and Lewes and on board the vessels.

But he says that will change starting Thursday in Delaware.

“We expect our On-the-Rocks outdoor grill at the Cape May Ferry Terminal to open July 1. And we also believe that the Grain-On-The-Rocks at the Lewes Terminal will open on June 11. Social distancing and the wearing of masks will be required at all times at these facilities," said Salmon.

The Ferry operating schedule has also been modified to include four daily departures from both Cape May, NJ and Lewes, DE.  And the summer schedule has been updated through Labor Day weekend, with additional crossings available Friday - Sunday and holidays beginning July 3.
