The Emergency and Trauma Center at Bayhealth’s new $314 million Sussex Campus opened early Tuesday morning and medical professionals began moving patients via ambulance from the old Milford Memorial Hospital to the new site’s inpatient rooms.

Dover’s Alexander Lakomyj has been in hospitals for three months and has had multiple heart surgeries. He was the first patient to be moved.

“Well they tell me, depending on which side you’re on, one side has a great sunrise and one side has a great sunset. So either way it’s a winner,” said Lakomyj.

Lakomyj was accompanied by his wife Diane to the new hospital which is more than twice the size of Milford Memorial.

“It must be state of the art. So we’re looking forward to seeing it,” she said. “All he’s talking about is getting his hands on a bicycle. He’s determined to get out of hospitals and be like he was before.”

After all 62 patients are moved to the Sussex campus, Milford Memorial will be taken over by Nationwide Health Services and turned into a nursing home.

The outpatient center at Bayhealth Sussex Campus opens Wednesday. The hospital expects to have all patients moved by then.
