Backyard Birds mural coming to downtown Dover

A huge mural of birds native to Delaware in downtown Dover is nearly complete.

The mural is coming to the Mitten & Winters building on Loockerman Street - and Kristin Pleasanton with the Delaware Division of the Arts says it’s called Backyard Birds.

“It came about because the Downtown Dover Partnership - the Design Committee - we received a grant to help with the funding for this mural from the Neighborhood Building Blocks Fund, and then the City of Dover also put in money. " said Pleasanton. "And we worked with the artist - his name is Josh Nobiling.”

Pleasanton saysNobiling has been working with his team of artists, students and over 50 community volunteers to complete Backyard Birds.

And she points out the birds depicted are all native to Delaware.

“These birds are native this this whole region actually, but you’ll see them in Delaware. They include a Cardinal, they include….there’s a Blue Heron,” said Pleasanton.

Pleasanton says the mural is expected to be completed by the end of this month; it’s being painted on a fabric, which will then be applied to the building.

Pleasanton says the hope is the mural brings an added vitality to the visual appeal of downtown Dover.
