Autism Delaware holds one of its major fundraisers this week in Lewes.
The Blue Jean Ball is Friday night at Nassau Valley Vineyards in Lewes
Autism Delaware development director David Woods says the organization relies on this event and others, like November’s Fall Auction Gala in Wilmington, to bring in the dollars they need to help support individuals and families affected by autism spectrum disorder statewide.
With the increase in autism [diagnoses], there’s an increase in need to support families with autism. And that’s an increase in revenue we need to generate somehow,” said Woods.
But Woods adds these events have another purpose- to build awareness and help connect those with autism to their communities
Autism can be very isolating for families and individuals affected by autism. And that isolation does two things. It can keep those families apart from the community, but it can also keep the community from understanding autism and understand the need [to support these families],” said Woods.
