Allen Harim relocates headquarters ahead of centennial anniversary

Allen Harim

Allen Harim has moved its corporate headquarters to Millsboro after nearly a century in Seaford.

The company is now based out of the former Vlasic Pickle plant it purchased back in 2014.

Allen Harim also expanded its Harbeson processing plant back in 2016 and is putting $22 million towards a new hatchery in Dagsboro set to open this fall.

Spokeswoman Cathy Bassett says moving the headquarters consolidates the company’s operation in Eastern Sussex County.

“That sort of made sense from a business perspective. So we’re all within 15 to 20 miles of each other. The hatchery, the processing plant and the corporate headquarters now,” said Basset.

The former Vlasic pickle building is about 460,000 square feet. The headquarters will occupy about 20,000 square feet and 50,000 square feet will be used for a deboning facility approved by a Sussex County board in May.

The rest of the site will be rented out or used for warehousing, according to Basset.

The headquarters will employ 50 people while the deboning facility will add 165 new jobs.

Allen Harim currently ships chicken out to be deboned in Georgia.

Bassett says the company plans to have the new deboning facility up and running in the fall once construction is completed and wastewater permits are finalized.

“Ultimately the plan there is to remove all of the wastewater from going into the stream," said Basset. "We’re looking at a variety of different technologies.”

Basset adds the company is looking into setting up a spray irrigation system and plans to dispose of treated wastewater at its Harbeson processing facility in the interim.

Nearby residents and environmental groups have expressed concernsabout the deboning operation.
