All you need to know if you're traveling to Philadelphia during the DNC

Delaware Public Media

50,000 people will be descending on Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center over the next week to attend the Democratic National Convention.

You shouldn’t expect too much of an impact if you’re driving through the area, according to Gene Donaldson, operations manager for Delaware’s Transportation Management Center.

“Since it’s a national kind of event you’re going to have people that are flying in. They’ll be riding the train in. Maybe driving in. So, all 50,000 people are not coming down 95,” Donaldson said.

Tractor trailers and recreational vehicles will be diverted off I-95 for security concerns so you should expect some additional traffic on I-76, I-676 and Route 291.

There will also be road closures around the stadium beginning Saturday and running through Friday, but all highways will remain open.

You should expect disruptive demonstrations around the Pennsylvania Convention Center during rush hour next week and enhanced security at the airport.

SEPTA is adding additional train service along the Broad Street Line, but you should expect the types of crowds you’d find during a sporting event.
