AARP and University of Delaware launch tuition discount for seniors

Delaware’s chapter of the AARP is partnering with the University of Delaware to offer a 15% discount to members and guests pursuing a Master’s of Liberal Arts degree.

Kimberly Iapalucci, a spokeswoman for Delaware’s AARP office, says the program is a smart career move for people over fifty.

"What we’ve learned is that people in their fifties, often are kind of at a higher risk for being downsized, or facing age discrimination in the workplace," she said.

She says enrolling in the program can give older people the boost they need to find new employment.

"What better way to do that -- after age fifty -- than by pursuing higher education, right?" she said with a laugh.

But that’s not all it does, according to Jeffrey Richardson, the interim director of the program.

"It also helps those who are looking at just life-long learning."

The Master’s of Liberal Arts degree is interdisciplinary -- students can take classes in everything from bio ethics to modern literature. And that’s what makes it so attractive to older people, he says.

The program is currently accepting registration for the Spring semester, which starts February 8th.
