AAA Mid-Atlantic collects school supplies to help students and teachers

The 2019-2020 school year is just about here and students and teachers will soon head back to the classroom. And students and teachers in need of school supplies are getting some help this year.

AAA Mid-Atlantic recently collected school supplies at all of its locations, including its Retail and Car Care Centers in Wilmington, Christiana and Dover. Staff are in the process of delivering those supplies to area schools this week.

Ken Grant, a spokesman for AAA, says many of the schools chosen serve students in low-income communities, “I’ve had the privilege of going along with our Associates as we go to drop off these school supplies at the various schools and we hear nothing but appreciation from the staff and teachers talking about how much this helps them throughout the school year.”

Grant says the community and an estimated 800 AAA Associates were involved in donating these supplies.

He says the goal is to ensure that students and teachers have what they need when the new school year starts, “And in some cases we have enough school supplies to allow the teachers to keep coming back again and again throughout the school year to replenish what they need - whether it’s notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers or every other school supply you can imagine. They really seem to appreciate this outpouring from the community.”

Grant says schools supported this year by the local collection drive include Booker T. Washington Elementary School in Dover, the Bancroft School in Wilmington, Gallaher Elementary School in Newark, the John G. Leach School in New Castle and Harry O. Eisenberg Elementary School in New Castle.

Meanwhile, Delaware’s Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) and the Human Services Council, Inc. are seeking donations from individuals, businesses and organizations to help provide backpacks and school supplies to thousands of children living in poverty, or in low-income households.

Online donations for New Castle County can be made here; donations for Kent County can be made here and donations for Sussex County can be made here.

The deadline to donate is Monday, August 19, 2019.
