Suchanec wins Newark City Council election

The results are in for the special election to fill a vacancy on Newark’s City Council.

John Suchanec won Tuesday’s race for the 1st District seat. He garnered 378 of the 589 votes cast, beating out Christina MacMillan.

Former District 1 councilman James Horning resigned just a month into his second term, citing personal challenges.

Suchanec is a retired Bank of America executive who previously served on Newark City Council during the 1980s.

He told the League of Women Voters he wants to focus on increasing access to affordable housing and determining how Newark will spend its $18 million in federal stimulus funds.

Suchanec will be sworn in on Thursday, July 29 at 6 p.m.
