Newark voters decide who should represent them on city council in a special election Tuesday.
Councilperson James Horning resigned from council just a month into his second term, citing personal challenges.
Two candidates face off to take Horning’s place as the first district council person.
Christina MacMillan is a construction executive who helped run Horning’s campaign a few years ago. She says focusing on listening to and addressing the news of community members is her first priority.
She’s competing against John Suchanec, a retired Bank of America executive who previously served on the city council during the 80’s.
In a statement to the League of Women Voters, Suchanec says he wants to come back to council to focus on increasing access to affordable housing and determining how Newark will spend its $18 million in federal stimulus funds.
1st district residents can vote at the Wesleyan Church of Newark anytime until 8pm tonight. Voters can go to the City of Newark’s website for more voting information.
