Dover is getting a new city manager

Delaware Public Media

The City of Dover makes its choice for a new city manager.

Randy Robertson is coming to the First State’s capital from Aberdeen, Maryland where he is currently city manager.

He is a retired U.S. Army officer, and was previously city manager in Ashland, Kentucky; Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; Vestavia Hills, Alabama and Cordova, Alaska over the past few decades. He also holds multiple advanced degrees.

“Mr. Robinson brings a renewed view of how to make our city greater and build upon what the former city managers have left with us,” said Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen.

The last three Dover city managers came from within city staff. But this time Dover City Council contracted an independent consulting firm, The Mercer Group, to aid in a national search for a new city manager.

Christiansen says he agrees with council’s decision to look nationally for its new hire as it did with the city’s police chief.

“He’s going to have his work cut out getting used to the staff and used to the city, but all in all I think that bringing someone from the outside was probably council’s best choice,” Christiansen said.

Robertson comes to Dover as city operations and revenues are affected by the pandemic as well as August’s tornado.

The city also has multiple labor contracts coming up for renegotiation.

Robertson starts in February.
