UD poll finds big leads for Delaware Dems at the top of the ballot

Delaware Public Media

The First State gets some rare public polling data, and it shows the state remains reliably “blue” as the 2020 General election approaches.

A University of Delaware Center for Political Communications poll finds commanding double-digit leads for Democratic candidates in the presidential and statewide races.

The closest contest is for President, where former Vice President Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump by 21 percentage points. The widest margin is found in the race for U.S. Senate, where Sen. Chris Coons leads his Republican challenger Lauren Witzke by 30 points.  Gov. John Carney and Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester also poll ahead of their Republican challengers Julianne Murray and Lee Murphy by at least 20 points.

UD CPC Research Director Paul Brewer says the results are not a shock, but notes the First State is an outlier in some ways.

“I think it’s interesting that there are other states that are equally blue—states like Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland—where at least in the Governor’s race the Republican party has been able to break through,” said Murphy. “That doesn’t seem to be the case in Delaware.”

The poll shows much of the support for Democrats comes from women and residents of New Castle County.

UD CPC Research Director Paul Brewer notes former Vice President Joe Biden’s 21-point lead over President Trump is slightly more comfortable than Hillary Clinton’s was this time in 2016.

“Of course Joe Biden is from Delaware so that’s a logical outcome that Biden would have more than a double-digit lead in his own state,” he said.

Brewer says the results of the UD poll is consistent with what national polls have indicated for Delaware. The margin of error in the UD CPC poll is four percent.
