DSU considering acquiring Wesley College

Delaware Public Media

Delaware State University confirms it is in discussions to acquire nearby Wesley College in Dover.

A Wesley spokesperson would not name DSU as a potential buyer, but did say discussions between Wesley and a potential partner institution are moving forward in a positive manner

DSU spokesman Carlos Holmes says the HBCU is considering the acquisition.

“Delaware State has since February been exploring the possibility of acquiring Wesley,” said Holmes. “No decision has been made on that yet. That exploration is still ongoing.”

Holmes says he expects DSU to decide on the matter by the end of the month.

“We just would like to be able to continue the ongoing exploration and find out if this is something that the university wants to do,” He added. “That’s where we’re at right now.”

Wesley is a private college, but received millions in state funds in recent years.

The college had reportedly been placed on a federal monitoring list due to its financial troubles, and has experienced declining undergraduate enrollment. It’s enrollment for the fall of 2019 was 1,035 - down from 16 hundred in fall 2013.

Wesley leadership has been vocal for some time about looking for a potential partner institution, but has yet to offer specifics.
