A Democratic challenger hopes to unseat to Republican State Sen. Cathy Cloutier in next year’s election.

Kyle Evans Gay is running to represent state Senate District 5, which includes Arden.

The 33-year-old attorney and activist spent the past two years advocating for lawmakers to pass the state’s Equal Rights Amendment, which became part of Delaware’s Constitution earlier this year.

Gay lives in Heatherbrooke with her husband and two children. As the mother of two girls under 5 years old, she says she’s passionate about the quality of education in the state.

“My family, my peers, we are invested in District 5," she said. "And we’re energetic and hopeful about the future. We have a lot of ideas about how we can you know mesh policy with action.”

Gay believes the district is ready to flip Democratic. She said it has more than 4,200 more registered Democrats than Republicans and went overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

“We have a lot of young families in the 5th District; we have a lot of even transplants to Delaware, people who have chosen Delaware as their home," she said. "And those people, you know, they bring a new view of what our district can be and what we can accomplish.”

Gay previously worked for Delaware Department of Justice and clerked for the state Superior Court. She has also served on the Public Integrity Commission.

Cloutier has represented the 5th District since 2000.
