New polling from the UD Center for Political Communication finds two Delaware Congressional incumbents cruising towards re-election.
Poll data shows Carper commands a 61% to 24% advantage over GOP challenger Rob Arlett, while Blunt Rochester outpaces Scott Walker 58% to 28%.
UD Research Analyst Paul Brewer said about 25% of Republicans say they will vote for Carper in November. He also leads Arlett in Sussex County, even though the county went for President Donald Trump in 2016 and Artlett is county councilman there.
“Carper’s political positions are probably more in line with the typical Delaware voter than Arlett’s," he said. "Artlett’s more of a Trump-style Republican and Trump didn’t do very well in Delaware.”
Blunt Rochester is ahead of Walker in Sussex County 45% to 34%. Brewer said Blunt Rochester’s not as well known as Carper, but she’s been helped by some of Walker’s outlandish comments on social media.
“So, I think that Waker’s unconventionality as a candidate is an additional advantage for Blunt Rochester, to put it mildly,” he said.
The state Republican party recently disavowed Walker after some of his remarks insulting Blunt Rochester, Carper and GOP party Chairman Mike Harrington.
Brewer said the margins for the two Democrats in Sussex and across the state reinforces the idea the midterms will bring the so-called “Blue Wave."
The poll also finds women are more likely to vote in November’s midterm elections, citing anger and anxiety as motivating factors.
The poll's margin of error is +/- 3.7%.
