Gov. Carney says sports betting decision impact remains unclear

Delaware Public Media

Gov. John Carney (D) said he’s unsure how Monday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing states to legalize sports betting may impact Delaware’s bottom line.

The final state revenue projections for the next budget year are due out in less than a week.

That leaves little time for state officials to evaluate how expanding sports betting here could add to Delaware’s coffers.

Carney added that it’s also too early to say if this change in the gaming landscape will influence his support of casino tax relief legislation that recently passed the state Senate.

“We’ll have to run some estimates there, see what happens initially and make some determination at some point about what’s the most reasonable expectation," he said.

The casino relief legislation sponsored by State Sen. Brian Bushweller (D-Dover) cuts the state’s take of slots and table gaming revenue and suspends the table license fee.

Carney said he’s been waiting for the May numbers from the Delaware Economic and Financial Advisory Council (DEFAC) before making a final decision on the bill. It’s unclear whether it can pass the House.
