Another candidate is vying for retiring Sen. Brian Bushweller’s seat.

Republican Jason Stewart has announced his candidacy for the 17th District office representing Dover, Camden and Wyoming.

Jason Stewart is a native of Magnolia. He’s an Iraq War veteran and is studying business management at Wilmington University.

Stewart said Democrats controlling state government are pushing the Delaware in the wrong direction. He says lawmakers need to create more good paying jobs and help students excel in school.

“We have to find ways to keep the money in the classroom," he said. "To actually get it to the students to help them grow and flourish so when they graduate high school, they can graduate college and hopefully build businesses in Delaware without leaving it.”

He currently serves as a commissioner for Delaware’s Commission of Veterans Affairs, vice chairperson for Delaware’s 34th Republican Representative District, Kent County representative for the Delaware Veterans Coalition, and secretary for Wilmington University’s military organization.

Democrats currently hold a one-seat majority in the Senate. Democratic State Rep. Trey Paradee has announced his campaign for Bushweller’s Dover area seat.

Bushweller has represented the 17th District since 2008.
