Sen. Carper weighs in on Senate healthcare proposal

Delaware Public Media

Sen. Tom Carper (D-Delaware) says he doesn’t know exactly how to react to the health care bill Senate Republicans released Thursday since it’s only a draft.

But he says it’s clearly not much of an improvement from the House version of the American Health Care Act.

“It’s as bad, or virtually as bad as the House-passed bill. The people that are going to be hurt most are people in nursing homes,”

Carper says people in nursing homes will be hurt most because more than two-thirds rely on Medicaid to pay for their housing.

The Republican health bill will cap the amount of Medicaid funding each state receives. That will be a $2 billion reduction for Delaware over 10 years.

Carper says today’s announcement makes it clear Democrats won’t have much say in shaping the final version of the bill.

It’s expected to be voted on before lawmakers leave for recess at the end of next week.
