State Rep. Bryon Short, a Brandywine Hundred Democrat, says he's ending his run for Delaware's lone congressional representative seat due to fundraising problems.
His campaign released a short statement Monday afternoon, saying, "Campaigns take an unbelievable amount of money to win. Although we have consecutively raised more money each quarter than the previous, I do not believe my campaign is on track to raise the necessary resources to get our message out in such a crowded field of candidates."
Short raised $152,000 since September and sat in a strong second place in terms of cash raised by year's end behind state Sen. Bryan Townsend.
Short was facing four other Democrats in September's primary: Sean Barney, Lisa Blunt Rochester, Michael Miller and Townsend.
"It is my hope and my belief that Americans will reject the ugly politics of the past several years and focus on electing people with a positive vision for our future," wrote Short. "I am confident that Delaware’s next Representative will be one of those people."
Short said he was foregoing another term in the General Assembly when he announced his congressional campaign, with three Democrats already seeking his seat. It's unclear whether he'll file for reelection and he was not immediately available for comment.
Former Wyoming mayor Hans Reigle and Rose Izzo are seeking the Republican nomination for the seat currently held by Democrat John Carney, who giving up the seat to run for governor.
