End of the year financial disclosure forms are beginning to trickle in, with one of the three candidates seeking Delaware’s top office reporting in.
Republican gubernatorial hopeful and state Sen. Colin Bonini (R-Dover South) raised just under $63,000 in 2015 – $25,000 of which is a loan to himself.
It’s a far cry from what’s expected from Democratic frontrunner John Carney (D) – who raised $500,000 since September.
Numbers for former state trooper Lacey Lafferty, who Bonini will face in a September primary, are still not in.
But Bonini says he’s confident he’ll make it a competitive race as his fundraising operation heats up.
“Is John most likely to continue to have more money than I have? Absolutely. But I tell you, the lesson I learned in politics is it’s not about who has more, it’s about whether you enough and I’m confident that we are going to have enough to mount an effective campaign and I really believe that,” he said.
He says his fundraising operation only got serious in the past few weeks and is planning to raise $250,000 over the next few months and $500,000 by the general election.
Candidates vying to replace Carney in the U.S House will file their 2015 annual reports next week.
