State Rep. Keeley to chair national group of women lawmakers

State Rep. Helene Keeley (D-Wilmington South) is the new Chair of the National Foundation for Women Legislators’ Board of Directors.

Keeley was elected at the 2015 NFWL Annual Conference earlier this month where over one hundred elected women from across the country met to discuss some of the nation’s pressing issues.

Keeley says an area of concern for her is opioid abuse.

“One of the things I would really like to focus on is to really try and bring some knowledge around how states are dealing with the epidemic that many of us have, not just Delaware, but across the nation, with heroin,” said Keeley.

Keeley has represented the 3rd District in the South Wilmington area since 1996. She begins serving in her new position on January 1, 2016.

Keeley says she’s honored to have the privilege and opportunity to chair the board of a body that dedicates itself to advancing women in governance. “And I like it because it's a non- partisan organization," she says. "Nobody really talks about whether they’re Democrats or Republicans and everybody is really concentrating on getting the best public policy accomplished." The National Foundation for Women Legislators recently celebrated its 75th anniversary.
