Gray fox bill heads to Gov. Markell's desk

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

After several months of talks and compromise, state lawmakers approved a bill allowing some accidental killings of Delaware’s wildlife animal.

House lawmakers signed off on legislation allowing hunters to accidentally kill a gray fox during the red fox hunting and trapping seasons, but only below the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.

If it happens in northern New Castle County, it would still be illegal under state law. Previously, it had been completely illegal statewide.

The original bill would’ve allowed DNREC to establish a full hunting season, getting a class of fourth graders from McVey Elementary School in Newark to lobby against it.

State senators worked out the compromise over the past month.

It now heads to Gov. Jack Markell’s desk for his signature.
