Dover Capital City Rotary moves ahead with annual Flags for Heroes program to help lift spirits

The 7th annual Flags for Heroes Program plans to go forward this year - despite the continuing Coronavirus pandemic.

The event is a collaboration between the Dover Capital City (DCC) Rotary Club and Delaware Tech held around Memorial Day each year.

The program honors military lives lost serving the country - as well as first responders and others.

Flags for Heroes organizers hope the display of 400 American flags between Friday, May 22, 2020 and Tuesday, June 2, 2020 will serve as a message of encouragement that better days are ahead.

Dave Skocik with theDover Capital City Rotary Club says they opted to press ahead because the event doesn’t rely on gatherings to create or view, “Using current guidelines, this will be a safe thing to do - because again, it will be a number of people in an open field setting up flags. We feel this is something with everything being cancelled, people are looking for an “upper.” And we believe that there’s nothing better than showing the colors during this stressful time.”

Skocik reiterates that he hopes the display can send a positive message during the current crisis, “This something that people need; it serves a good purpose. The Club uses this to support community organizations and such - scholarships and such. And we’re emphasizing particularly this time, the people out there - the first responders, the medical folks, the police and all these other folks who have got to stand up there and support the community..”

Skocik says organizers hope hundreds of people will drive by the display Memorial Day weekend at Del Tech on Route 13 in Dover.

Skocik says flag sponsorship is $50 and it is tax deductible.

Order form and payment options can be found at the Rotary Club’s website.

Honorees and flag sponsors will also be identified in an advertisement in the Delaware State News on Thursday, May 21, 2020.

Anyone wishing to make a private donation can send a check made out to Dover Capital City Rotary Services Club, 209 Manor Drive, Middletown, DE 19709.

There are also three levels of corporate sponsorship available: $250, $500 and $1,000. For more information email Dr. Kirill Alekseyev at kiril.alekseyev@gmail.com or call him at 917-379-8964.
