The University of Delaware’s acting president will leave the school shortly after new president Dennis Assanis takes over this summer.

UD announced Tuesday that Nancy Targett has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of New Hampshire.   She’ll start that job September 1st.

"I am honored and excited at the opportunity to serve as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of New Hampshire. I am ready for new challenges and new adventures," said Targett in statement. "At the same time this is a bittersweet moment for me, since I have a deep affection for the University of Delaware and its people."

Targett has been serving as UD’s acting president since July of last year when Patrick Harker left the post to become president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.  She was previously dean of UD's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment and director of the Delaware Sea Grant College Program.

"Nancy Targett's distinguished tenure at the University -- as a faculty member, dean, Sea Grant director and now acting president -- has been marked by her dedication and commitment to UD's mission and its people. Nancy has truly made a difference at Delaware," said UD's Board of Trustees chairman John Cochran in a statement.

Gov. Markell also praised Targett's contributions to the university.

“Acting President Targett has excelled in her many roles serving students, her colleagues, and the broader University community during her three decades at UD. She was a terrific choice to guide the University through the challenges of transition, and she has provided outstanding leadership on campus and beyond as one of the preeminent educational leaders of our state," said Markell in a statement.“As she did on my Transition Team prior to my first term, and during our many meetings throughout my time as Governor, Nancy has offered an invaluable perspective on key public policies, from higher education to environmental issues. She will be sorely missed."

Targett will finish her term as acting president when Assanis steps in to the office July 1st.
