Food Bank of Delaware names new President and CEO

The Food Bank of Delaware welcomes a new President and CEO this spring. Cathy Kanefsky takes charge on May 3.

Kanefsky has 30 years of nonprofit work experience at Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children, Autism Speaks and the March of Dimes Foundation - all are close to Kanefsky’s heart - she has twin boys who were born four months premature and later diagnosed with autism.

Kanefsky says The Food Bank is the next step in her mission to help serve people and is thrilled and humbled she was selected.

“So many more people in the state of Delaware and throughout the country and honestly throughout the world right now are waking up not knowing what tomorrow is going to be and what tomorrow is going to bring and in this case where their next meal is going to come from," Kanefsky said. "That’s what did it for me. It was the uncertainty in so many lives and thinking that I might be a part of bringing them hope.”

She adds that the organization’s work during the pandemic is a big reason why she wants to work there.

“It is unbelievable to have been living in Delaware and watching this past year how the Food Bank has just stepped up to incredible need," Kanefsky said. "There always has been incredible need here but the increase has been staggering.”

Over the past year, the organization has distributed more than 18 million pounds of food to Delawareans in need, 69 percent of which went through drive thru pantries  for the first time this year due to insecurity caused by the pandemic.
