Timetable for new county library in Middletown is pushed back

Delaware Public Media

Southern New Castle County residents will have to wait a little longer for the new library planned there.

But even though the library will now open in 2022 instead of 2021, county officials say there’s nothing to worry about.

The library will be in Middletown on the corner of Route 299 and South Catherine Street.

The hope is to break ground in late Spring/Early Summer of 2020, and complete the project in 2022.

Work was originally slated to begin this year, but Brian Cunningham, Director of Strategic Communications for the New Castle County Executive says the delay is to ensure everyone is on the same page.

"We just want to make sure we got the proper amount of public input and feedback and we also wanted to make sure we are on the right page and had the right coordination with the City of Middletown and DelDOT."

County officials have said the current Appoquinimink library, which leases space in an office building in Middletown, is heavily used, but is just too small.

The new library is expected to be more than twice the size of the current one, and around the same size as the one in Brandywine Hundred. There's also room on the land it will be built to expand in the future if necessary.

The new facility will include media rooms, meeting spaces and programming - such as job training.
