Dune fencing to be erected at Lewes Beach starting next week

Submitted Photo
A dune fencing project to protect the dune on Lewes Beach gets underway next week.

New fencing is going up to protect the sand dunes on Lewes Beach.

DNREC’s Shoreline & Waterway Management Section and the City of Lewes are adding the fencing along the bay side of the primary dune, starting next week.

It’s designed to help protect the dune’s fragile habitat and deter area residents from leaving personal items on the dune that can damage it.

DNREC officials say the dune-fencing project is expected to take two weeks to complete.

Flyers were distributed by mail to area residents in August asking them to remove items, such as bikes, boats, and kayaks from the dune.

Any personal property remaining on the Lewes Beach dune when the project starts will be removed by DNREC staff.

DNREC also placed signage at Lewes Beach over the summer reminding beachgoers to stay off the dune - and only use existing pathways when crossing it.
