Croda pays DRBA for Delaware Memorial Bridge closure

Croda, Inc.

The company responsible for a chemical leak that closed the Delaware Memorial Bridge last November is paying compensation for that incident.

Croda, Inc. will reimburse the Delaware River and Bay Authority, which operates the bridge, $142,610 to cover lost revenue and operating expenses associated with the Nov. 25closure.

The bridge connecting Delaware and New Jersey was shut down for seven hours on the busy Sunday after Thanksgiving after the nearby chemical manufacturing plant accidentally released 2,600 pounds of flammable ethylene oxide.

The DRBA formally requested reimbursement from the company.

“We regret the significant inconvenience this situation had on our neighbors and those traveling in the area. We pride ourselves on being a good corporate citizen and a longstanding responsible member of this community.  Reimbursing the DRBA is the right thing to do,” said Croda’s Managing Director of North American Operations Robert Stewart, in a statement.

“We appreciate the frank discussion we had with Mr. Stewart and his team at Croda regarding the incident and our path forward together. Croda officials have been extremely responsive to our questions and suggestions.  When presented with the accounting of our loss revenue and costs associated with this unfortunate incident, they responded immediately.” said Delaware River and Bay Authority executive director Tom Cook in his own statement.
