Securing pets could help keep drivers safe

A new poll finds many Delaware drivers travel with pets and officials are urging people to secure their furry friends safely.

The AAA poll found that 43 percent of First State pet owners travel with their animals.

With that in mind, Ken Grant of AAA-Mid Atlantic says pet and driver safety is key.

"AAA always advises that you make sure the pet is well secured in the car," said Grant. "And that could be a quick run out to a park, or out to a restaurant even. There are some very pet-friendly places around here in Delaware. It could be that road trip cross country,"

He urges pet owners to secure their animals with a harnesses or in carrying case.

Grant also suggests acclimating pets to car rides and making them fun experiences for furry friends, not just trips to the veterinarian.
