Route 1 between Bethany Beach and Dewey Beach closed to flooding

Delaware Public Media

Delaware transportation officials warn that Route 1 between Bethany Beach and Dewey Beach is likely to be closed due to flooding until Saturday morning.

DelDOT spokesman Jim Westhoff said both directions of traffic on that stretch highway were closed Thursday night.

The northbound section of road between Bethany and Dewey was open Friday afternoon but expected to close again Friday night.

“The reason that section of Route 1 has been closing is because of high tide. When we’re having high tide water is coming up on the road and we have to close the road,” Westhoff said.

Westhoff expects both directions of that stretch of road to close again Friday evening around 8:00, which is when the next high tide is predicted

After that, he expects the road to remain open for the rest of the weekend.

DelDOT crews are working to open roads as fast as they can. But they need to clear debris left by receding water, according to Westhoff.

“In addition we need to inspect the road and make sure there’s no damage to the road before we reopen it. Sometimes the flooding can scour underneath the road and make it unsafe,” Westhoff said.

DelDOT crews closed just over 30 roads statewide this week because of flooding. Most of those roads were in Sussex County.  They also report some 52 other roads with some water on them.
