Record-breaking number of travelers expected this 4th of July

Delaware Public Media

More people will travel this Independence Day weekend than ever before, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic projections.

More than 115,000 Delawareans will head somewhere this 4th of July, which is a 1.4 percent increase over last year

Travel over the Independence Day weekend has been on a steady increase over the past four years and that’s most likely because of lower gas prices. This is also the fourth year in a row the Independence Day holiday has created a three-day weekend.

A majority of those Delawareans (83 percent) will be traveling by car , but air travel is also on the rise this year, by nearly 2 percent.

"We think one of reasons is because average air fares for the top 40 domestic flight routes are going to be 9 percent less than they were last year," said Kathleen Miller, with AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Hotel fares are also slightly cheaper this year.

You may want to grab a set of extra keys, check your tire pressure and test your battery before hitting the road this weekend.

AAA rescued more than 1,000 Delawareans from the side of the road last Independence Day weekend, according to Miller.

The primary reasons for roadside rescues include dead batteries, lockouts and flat tires.
