Penultimate U.S. 301 construction contract awarded

DelDOT has awarded the second-to-last construction contract related to the $470 million U.S. Route 301 project.

Diamond Materials out of Newport, Delaware will create the new intersection at U.S. Route 13 and Port Penn Road with toll-free access to State Route 1.

Their bid came in at $11.1 million and construction will take a little more than two years to complete.

Much of the most significant construction has been underway since February, with the biggest portions of the project expected to take about three years.

DelDOT officials say the new toll road will help ease congestion along the existing corridor near Middletown, which has seen a boom in development – and with it, traffic.

Once completed, drivers will easily be able to merge with Route 1 from U.S. 301 without having to travel on local roads, more easily linking the southern and northern portions of the Mid-Atlantic.
