Newark City Council approves open carry gun ban

Newark City Council Monday night voted to prohibit openly-carried firearms from municipal buildings.

According to the Newark Post, the board voted 6 to 1 to ban guns from all city-owned or leased buildings where the city meets in its official capacity, as well as buildings containing offices of elected officials.

Signs will be posted at the entrance to city hall and the police station to let people know about the law. Anyone found in violation will be asked to leave and could face fines up to $500 as well as one year in jail.

Democratic state legislators representing the Newark area wrote a letter in support of the ordinance last week, noting guns are already prohibited in state and federal government buildings and courthouses.

According to the News Journal, Delaware City, Elsmere, Lewes, Newport, Seaford and Wilmington have all implemented similar bans.
