Man who was kicked in head by Dover police officer in 2013 arrested on gun charges

Delaware State Police

State police arrested Lateef Dickerson, a man who was kicked in the head by a Dover police officer in 2013, in Christiana early morning on Thursday.

Dickerson, along with two other men, were pulled over by state troopers. After a search of the vehicle, police say they found a gun stashed in the backseat.

All three men were arrested and charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited.

The driver of the vehicle, Von Smith, was arraigned and released. Dickerson and the other man, Taron Hampton, are being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington for lack of bail.

Dickerson received much attention during the trial of Dover Corporal Thomas Webster. Webster was facing criminal assault charges for kicking Dickerson in the face, which was captured on a police car dashcam. Dickerson had filed a civil suit against Webster and the city of Dover that was recently settled.

State police also say that Dickerson was on probation and been wanted by the Middletown Police Department for several counts of burglary and failing to register as a sex offender.
