Shabazz calls on CDC to release their full report about violence in Wilmington

The Centers for Disease Control were set to release their report and findings about the epidemic of violent crime in Wilmington back in March. Now October, the organization has yet to release the full document.

City council member HanifaShabazz, who requested the report, wrote the CDC a few weeks ago urging them to release their full findings and recommendations. They told her to wait until November.

"I don’t know why, I don’t know if it’s because it’s so extensive, the research and the follow up. I can’t imagine what is causing the delay," she says.

She believes the report is especially needed now, as the city struggles with violent crime. On Thursday, six people were shot in Wilmington in a 24 hour period.

"They said it was one of the most extensive collections of data that they’d ever gotten with such a case. And with the continuing incidents that are happening within our city it’s just imperative that we get the results, so that we can do something about it," added Shabazz.

In a press release, Shabazz said she thought it was embarrassing to, “have to practically beg the nation’s leading physical and mental health institution to release this report.”

To date, there have been 22 homicides this year. In 2014, there were 23.

The CDC began its study of violent crime in Wilmington back in June 2014. It offered a preliminary report last March.
