Matusiewicz jury selection underway

Delaware Public Media

Jury selection began Monday for the trial against the family of New Castle County Courthouse shooter Thomas Matusiewicz, but much of it will happen outside the public eye.

U.S. District Court judge Gerald McHugh Monday barred the public from the courtroom while potential jurors are individually questioned.

McHugh wrote it is "not practicableto conduct an appropriate and effective individual voir dire in open court."

Thomas Matusiewicz's wife Lenore and children David Matusiewicz and Amy Gonzalez are charged with interstate cyberstalking and criminal conspiracy.

Thomas shot and killed David’s ex-wife, Christine Belford, in February 2013 following a bitter custody battle over their three children.

After killing Belford and another woman, Thomas Matusiewicz killed himself following a shootout with police.

David formerly worked as a Newark optometrist and had previously been convicted of kidnapped his children in 2007, fleeing to Central America before being caught nearly two years later.

The trial is expected to last weeks
