Delaware’s Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs (HCA) is looking at what’s next for historic preservation in the First State.
The agency recently released its historic preservation plan for 2018 through 2022.
Tim Slavin is the director of the Division of HCA. He’s also the State’s historic preservation officer.
He says the plan is called “Partners in Preservation: Planning for the Future.”
“This is an activity that we do every five years, where we go out and coordinate a whole lot of listening across the community and collaboration with the Historic Preservation community, with local Historical Societies and with people who have an interest in history. And the plan itself really provides the framework for activities across a wide spectrum of historic preservation,” said Slavin.
Slavin says the plan outlines six broad goals for the next five years and suggests specific strategies and actions that can help achieve these goals.
The goals include strengthening and expanding Delaware’s core federal and state historic preservation programs to support preservation initiatives statewide -- and making information on Delaware’s historic preservation resources readily available.
"We’re being a little more inclusive with our view of historic preservation and than we’re also developing a grassroots approach to historic preservation in the communities,” said Slavin.
Slavin adds a big part of the Plan is to move the historic preservation information to a digital platform so that people can access it themselves.
He calls historic preservation is about a quality of life issue that needs to work in concert with land-use decision statewide.
The final plan is the product of two years of work.
