Wilmington brings back Caroling in the Square after a four-year hiatus

City of Wilmington

Wilmington’s Rodney Square is decorated and ready for holiday caroling and the tree lighting celebration Tuesday night.

The festivities will include familiar Christmas characters, like Rudolf and the Grinch. Holiday songs will be led by the Wilmington Children’s Chorus, Delaware Choral Arts, and the combined choirs of Saints Andrew and Matthew Catholic Schools.

Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz says the festivities are for everyone.

“The Caroling on the Square event is a way that no matter what your faith tradition, your personal tradition, your cultural tradition, that you will come down and be a part of the Wilmington community and also give back to the community by bringing canned goods,” said Betz.

Bentz adds Kenny’s Shop Rite will be at Rodney Square providing snacks and hot chocolate in exchange for non-perishable food items donated to the Salvation Army.

It has been four years since the last tree lighting ceremony in Wilmington.

“The new administration did not have a hand in that. So, we’re not sure what the reasons were for not doing it, but we’re very happy to be bringing it back. It’s one of those types of events the community missed,” said Betz.

Mayor Mike Purzycki will light the tree—the event gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.
